Catastrophic Wound Care

WARNING: The following contains graphic photos, please wait while the slide show loads.

The following is a slide show of one of our riding mares that impaled herself on a T-Post.  The initial injury occurred on 01/22/08.  She was very fortunate that she did not puncture a lung or sever a major artery.  However, she did manage to separate all of the skin from the muscle in the entire chest front.  The T-post went into the pec muscle at least 6" deep and about 8" in length.  The photos are dated when they were taken. The rapid healing is due to daily cleansing and application of Eclipse wound wash and wound cream.  The wound cream promotes skin cell regeneration and hair growth.  When this wound is completely closed a small thin scar will be all that is left of this very scary injury.  She did not require stitches or antibiotics.   She was hand walked daily the first 12 days, she was able to be ridden lightly at a walk 12 days after this occurred.  She can now be ridden at regular pace at a walk, trot and minimal canter, she would probable canter a lot more but we are restricting that until the muscle finishes healing all the way. It may not be possible to ride this quickly on all wound/injury situations.

The progress of the healing will be kept up to date, so check back periodically.  Eclipse wound wash and wound cream can also be purchased at Valley Vet Supply
